Nothing is more frustrating than having to mow your way around obstacles in the yard. There are many ways to minimize the items your mower can’t go over. Build paths to the doors of the home that can be mowed over. The way to do this is to determine the path height needed for the mower to go right over the path. If your path has spaces between bricks or stepping stones, you can mow over them also and save yourself from having to trim these areas also.

Set the mower blade at the proper height to prevent weed growth. Some experts will tell you the mower blade should always be set at 3″, but it actually depends on the type of grass you have in your yard. For warm climate grasses, the ideal height tends to be approximately 1-1/2″ to 2″. Cold climate grasses prefer a height of around 2-1/2″. When grass is cut too short, it becomes weak. Leaving it slightly longer in times of drought gives it added strength. It tends to grow faster and will crowd out unwanted weeds. If you don’t know what type of grass you have in your yard, take a sample to the local nursery. They will be able to tell you.
